How Hosting Horizon researches, writes, and ranks hosting content

This page explains how Hosting Horizon's editorial team puts pages together — from where provider facts come from to how rankings and Hosting Horizon Score are calculated — and the boundaries that keep affiliate revenue separate from what we publish.

Editorial Independence

Hosting Horizon's content is produced by the Hosting Horizon editorial team. Our affiliate relationships with hosting providers, described in full on our Advertising Disclosure page, are a source of revenue, not an input into what we write or how a provider is rated. A provider cannot pay to raise its Hosting Horizon Score, move up a best-of list, or have an unfavorable review taken down. Providers that don't run an affiliate program at all are treated identically in our rating and ranking logic to those that do.

How We Research Providers

Provider facts — plan names, pricing, storage and bandwidth limits, guarantees, data-center locations, and similar details — are collected from each provider's own public website. Because providers change their plans, pricing, and terms without notice, these details can go out of date between checks; the price or feature you see on Hosting Horizon should always be confirmed on the provider's own site before you buy. We do not run our own server benchmarks or lab tests, and we don't present any figures as the results of independent testing we didn't do.

How Rankings and Hosting Horizon Score Work

Two separate systems feed into what you see on Hosting Horizon:

Hosting Horizon Score is an automatic 0–5 rating calculated from moderated user reviews across five criteria — Performance, Reliability, Pricing, Support, and Features — using a Bayesian average (a neutral starting point equivalent to 7 reviews at 3.5 stars) that gives more weight to recent reviews than old ones. The full formula is explained on our Hosting Horizon Score page.
Best-of lists, such as our web hosting and VPS comparison pages, are ordered using current plan data — price, plan choice, money-back guarantee, support channels, and data-center reach — combined with Hosting Horizon Score once a provider has collected enough reviews to make the score meaningful. Our Rating Methodology page walks through this in detail.

Editors can adjust a list's ordering or notes when plan data changes or a correction is needed, but no one can manually inflate a Hosting Horizon Score or insert a provider ahead of where the underlying data would place it because of a business relationship.

User Review Moderation

Reviews are written by site visitors, not by our editorial team, and each one is moderated before it's published and counted toward a Hosting Horizon Score. A hosting provider can claim its profile and post a public reply to a review, but it cannot edit or delete a review itself. This keeps the review history a genuine record of what customers have reported, positive or negative.

Affiliate Relationships

Hosting Horizon earns commissions when readers click certain outbound links, marked with a /go/ redirect, and go on to sign up with a provider. This funds the site, but it is kept structurally separate from editorial judgment: the same review-moderation rules, the same Hosting Horizon Score formula, and the same ranking factors apply to every provider regardless of whether — or how much — they pay in commission. See our Advertising Disclosure for the full picture.

Use of Software Tools

Some Hosting Horizon content may be drafted with the help of software tools as part of our production process. Any such draft is reviewed and edited by a member of our editorial team before publication, and the facts, figures, and claims in a published page are the editorial team's responsibility — not an unreviewed machine output.

Corrections and Updates

Provider pricing, plans, and terms shift often, and we rely partly on readers to flag when something on Hosting Horizon no longer matches what a provider actually offers. If you spot outdated or incorrect information, you can report it through our Contact page, and we'll review and update the page as needed. Pages that have been revised show an update date so you can see how current the information is.

Conflicts of Interest

Where Hosting Horizon has a business relationship with a provider — such as an affiliate partnership or a claimed business profile — that relationship is disclosed on our Advertising Disclosure page rather than hidden inside individual articles. Any sponsored or featured placement on the site is clearly labeled as such and kept separate from Hosting Horizon Score-based rankings.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hosting provider pay to change its ranking or Hosting Horizon Score?

No. Hosting Horizon Score is calculated automatically from moderated user reviews using the same formula for every provider, and best-of list ordering is based on plan data and Hosting Horizon Score. Affiliate commissions play no role in either calculation.

Where does Hosting Horizon get its pricing and plan information?

From each provider’s own public website. Providers update plans and pricing on their own schedule, so always confirm current details on the provider’s site before purchasing.

Does Hosting Horizon run its own performance tests on hosting providers?

No. We don’t run independent lab benchmarks and don’t present any figures as results of testing we performed ourselves. Our ratings come from moderated user reviews and publicly available provider data.
